Event Description:

The Whatley Center for Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community College will host a concert by the A Cappella Choir of Wiley College Sunday, January 21 at 2:30 p.m.

Wiley College in Marshall is called the “Home of the Great Debaters” because of its phenomenal, internationally-known debate team. Yet, the A Cappella Choir of Wiley College (ACWC) holds the distinction of being the oldest internationally known organization on the campus.

Founded 120 years ago as the Wiley University Jubilee Singers, the ACWC was led by conductors including Edward Boatner, William Henry Smith, Gilbert Francis Allen and Earl B. LaRue. The group is currently under the direction of Stephen L. Hayes. Recent accomplishments of the ACWC include three invitations to sing at the White House, recorded motion picture sound tracks for three films and is featured on Atlantic Records “The Birth of a Nation…Inspired By” CD singing with Grammy nominee Trey Songz.

“Last year the Whatley began hosting a series that highlights musical talent from Northeast Texas. When I heard the A Cappella Choir of Wiley College, I knew I wanted to invite them to sing on our stage,” Carolyn Franks, Whatley Center Director said. “The choir is rich in history and continues to recruit wonderful young singers. They are a real treat to experience.”

The program will include a variety of hymn and spiritual arrangements, including a selection by the Renaissance Dance Ensemble of Wiley College. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students. They can be purchased online at whatleycenter.com or they will be available at the door the day of the concert.
